Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was established in 1875 as the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, a renowned reformer, educationist, and visionary. His aim was to promote modern education among Indian Muslims while preserving Islamic values and culture. The institution became the centre of educational renaissance in India during the colonial period.
In 1920, the college was transformed into Aligarh Muslim University through an Act of the Indian Parliament. Since then, AMU has emerged as one of the leading central universities in India, known for its academic excellence, cultural diversity, and commitment to inclusive education.
The university’s campus, located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, spans over 467 hectares, housing more than 300 courses in traditional and modern branches of education.
