Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) were established in 1985 under the National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986, initiated by the Government of India.
The vision behind JNVs was the dream of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who wanted to ensure that talented children from rural India receive quality education comparable to the best residential schools, irrespective of their socio-economic condition.
The first two experimental JNVs were started in Amravati (Maharashtra) and Jhajjar (Haryana) in 1985.
JNVs are fully residential, co-educational schools, providing free education from Class 6 to Class 12 and are affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
They are run by an autonomous organisation called the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) under the Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Today, JNVs are known for their academic excellence, discipline, and for producing meritorious students, especially from rural areas.
