Banaras Hindu University (BHU), one of India’s premier central universities, was founded in 1916 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, a renowned educationist, lawyer, and nationalist leader. The vision behind BHU was to blend the best of ancient Indian education with modern scientific learning, nurturing a strong sense of national pride and cultural heritage among Indian youth.
The university played a significant role during India’s freedom movement by producing intellectuals, scientists, lawyers, and leaders who contributed actively to nation-building. Today, BHU stands as a symbol of academic excellence, cultural richness, and commitment to holistic education.
The sprawling campus of BHU is located in Varanasi (Banaras), Uttar Pradesh, covering nearly 1,300 acres, making it one of the largest residential universities in Asia.
To expand its reach, BHU has also established off-campus centres to provide higher education opportunities to students in remote and underserved regions.
